In 1983, his widow Lucille willed the building and its contents to New York City for the creation of a museum and study center devoted to Armstrong’s career and the history of jazz. Armstrong appeared in more than a dozen Hollywood films, usually playing a bandleader or musician. His most familiar role was as the bandleader cum narrator in the 1956 musical High Society, starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Celeste Holm.

He was able to access the upper echelons of American society at a time when this was difficult for Black men. In addition to the preserved rooms, the house features an exhibition cataloguing Louis Armstrong’s life and achievements and an ever growing collection of objects related to the musician, donated by family and friends. Even Armstrong’s compendious record collection is preserved at the site. The Louis Armstrong House may have been a home to the jazz musician, but now it is a living, talking record. The many years of constant touring eventually wore down Armstrong, who had his first heart attack in 1959 and returned to intensive care at Beth Israel Hospital for heart and kidney trouble in 1968. Doctors advised him not to play but Armstrong continued to practice every day in his Corona, Queens home, where he had lived with his fourth wife, Lucille, since 1943.

Family

LAHM is in the midst of a dramatic physical and programmatic transformation marked by the opening of the new Louis Armstrong Center, including a 75-seat performance space, a state of the art multimedia exhibition, and the Armstrong Archival Collections. The Center will allow us to live the Armstrong values of Artistic Excellence, Education and Community through programs such as Armstrong Now! With the Louis Armstrong House Museum and Archives currently closed because of Covid-19, we thought it would be beneficial to offer virtual tours of each location here on our new “That’s My Home” site. In 2018, videographer Michael Paras filmed Director of Research Collections Ricky Riccardi giving tours of the Armstrong House and Garden, as well as our Archives at Queens College. We’d like to offer to this video to give a glimpse inside our locations as we await the day we can safely welcome visitors around the world back to Queens.

Museum

There are also recordings of Armstrong talking to friends and practicing trumpet so it’s almost as if the jazz great is still haunting his former abode, although the experience is more educational than supernatural. His wife, Lucille, continued to live in their home on 107th Street in Corona, Queens, working to ensure that it became a National and New York Historic Landmark. Lucille expressed the desire for the home and archives to become a museum honoring her husband. They established the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation (LAEF) which helped to facilitate this process and continues to work today as a force for jazz education. After Lucille’s passing in 1983, she willed the home and its contents to the city of New York which designated the City University of New York, Queens College to shepherd the process.

His two recordings for Columbia Records, Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy (1954) and Satch Plays Fats (all Fats Waller tunes) (1955), were both being considered masterpieces, as well as moderately well selling. In 1961, the All Stars participated in two albums, The Great Summit and The Great Reunion (now together as a single disc) with Duke Ellington. The albums feature many of Ellington's most famous compositions (as well as two exclusive cuts) with Duke sitting in on piano. His participation in Dave Brubeck's high-concept jazz musical The Real Ambassadors (1963) was critically acclaimed and features "Summer Song", one of Armstrong's most popular vocal efforts. Perhaps most touching is Armstrong’s pure and undying affinity for his neighborhood. The house is a gem frozen in time, as if the Armstrongs have just stepped out.

Headed by the same architecture firm who built the Louis Armstrong house in 1910, the project broke ground this summer and will include a state-of-the-art exhibition gallery and a 68-seat jazz club when completed. It’s set to open in 2019, and we can’t wait to return when it does. Armstrong continued touring the world and making records with songs like “Blueberry Hill” (1949), “Mack the Knife” (1955) and “Hello, Dolly!

days that rocked USC: How a derailed commencement brought ‘complete disaster’

Caples Jefferson Architects designed the 14,000-square-foot building, staying mindful of the Armstrongs’ love for their community and their neighbors on the block. In addition the interior of the house was renovated to their taste.[7] Ornate bathrooms, and the kitchen was not originally part of the house. Paintings and souvenirs were given to Louis Armstrong on tour from Asia, Europe to Africa. These gifts[8] have found a home of their own on dressers, night stands, shelves and walls.

Armstrong’s improvised solos transformed jazz from an ensemble-based music into a soloist’s art, while his expressive vocals incorporated innovative bursts of scat singing and an underlying swing feel. By the end of the decade, the popularity of the Hot Fives and Sevens was enough to send Armstrong back to New York, where he appeared in the popular Broadway revue, “Hot Chocolates.” He soon began touring and never really stopped until his death in 1971. As his music progressed and popularity grew, his singing also became very important. Armstrong was not the first to record scat singing, but he was masterful at it and helped popularize it with the first recording on which he scatted, "Heebie Jeebies". Armstrong did, thinking the track would be discarded, but that was the version that was pressed to disc, sold, and became an unexpected hit.

The longtime residence of the famed jazz trumpeter, singer and bandleader, it is a midcentury interior design treasure hidden behind a modest brick exterior. Armstrong had nineteen "Top Ten" records[125] including "Stardust", "What a Wonderful World", "When The Saints Go Marching In", "Dream a Little Dream of Me", "Ain't Misbehavin'", "You Rascal You", and "Stompin' at the Savoy". "We Have All the Time in the World" was featured on the soundtrack of the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and enjoyed renewed popularity in the UK in 1994 when it was featured on a Guinness advertisement. Was important in introducing into the mainstream of popular singing an Afro-American concept of song as a lyrical extension of speech ... The new group was announced at the opening of Billy Berg's Supper Club.

These areas can be transformed into bookshelves, wine racks, or even small workstations, thereby contributing significantly to your overall storage strategy. It’s through careful planning that every inch of available space can be utilized efficiently without compromising aesthetics or comfort.

Different Architectural Styles for Your Family Home in Los Angeles

In some regions, there is a second step you will need to take to ensure your house plans are in compliance with local codes. Examples of this would be, but not limited to, earthquake-prone areas of California and the Pacific Coast, hurricane risk areas of the Florida, Gulf & Carolina Coasts. New York, New Jersey, Nevada, and parts of Illinois require review by a local professional as well.

The national average cost to install a bathtub can range from $1,500 to $10,000. Though its skyline will never measure up to the likes of New York or Chicago, Los Angeles has carved out its own architectural identity. Look below the glassy skyscrapers and you'll find Art Deco high-rises in Downtown Los Angeles, craftsman bungalows in Pasadena and envious estates along the hills and beaches. We think Los Angeles architecture is worth celebrating, so we've put together this guide to some of the city's most remarkable buildings and styles. Architectural designer Grey Shaeffer of Willa Work looked no farther than her backyard in Portland, Oregon, to find her next project.

Plan Description

Casement and awning windows work well in smaller spaces and provide excellent airflow. Other complementary types of windows include the classic double-hung or space-saving sliding options. You could also choose a custom window to add your personal touch to the room. An upgraded bathroom door or window can compliment your room’s decor and add more functionality to the space. The average price for replacement bathroom doors ranges from $300 to $1,400, depending on the selected style.

This collection of Drummond House Plans small house plans and small cottage models may be small in size but live large in features. Floor plans include one, two and even 3 bedrooms and open floor plans to maximize space and flow. Enter the home through the primary foyer, with direct access to the formal living area. A combined kitchen and dining area is perfect for hosting guests, while a wall of windows lets the light in year-round. The main level also includes a sizable primary suite with an attached full bathroom.

Whether you want 1 bedrooms or 5 bedrooms, there are plenty of ready to build homes available for you to choose from. There are currently 89 floor plans available for you to build within all 73 communities throughout the Los Angeles area. Browse through our entire collection of home designs, floor plans, and house layouts that are ready to be built today. The Plan Collection loves the 800 to 900 square foot home, and that shows in our wide array of available small house floor plans.

A remodel involves changing the layout and replacing the tub or shower and requires additional installation costs. Depending on your bathroom’s size, you may opt for either a shower or tub. In larger spaces, such as a primary bathroom, you can indulge in separate shower and tub fixtures. If you’re considering replacing a window, you should budget $300 to $700 for simplistic styles and upwards of $1,200 for more complex window options.

Radiant heated flooring is a popular choice to protect against cold feet on chilly days, and wiring a sound system into the walls allows you to play your favorite music while relaxing in the tub. You can connect both of these features to a smart-home system, which can also help you conserve water or electricity. There are numerous options, from a simple alcove tub to a whirlpool or jetted tub. Likewise, a new shower can range from a prefabricated stall unit to a high-end custom shower with mosaic wall and floor tile.

To find the perfect house in Los Angeles, you are going to look at a lot of floor plans from a number of builders. Now that you have looked at many house plans, you have probably noticed that most modern home plans designs tend to be of an open style. The popularity of open floor plans reflect the way home shoppers want to live, however not every builder offers this type of floor plan. Not quite tiny houses, 700 to 800 square feet house plans are nevertheless near the far end of the “small” spectrum of modern home plans. They are small enough to give millennial homeowners some satisfaction in participating in the minimalist aesthetic, yet large enough that they can sustain brand-new families. Some popular designs for this square footage include cottages, ranch homes, and Indian style house plans and small rectangular house plans."

The city of Santa Cruz offers ADU prototypes that you can use for inspiration. Click on the powerpoint links to download presentations that include floor plans. Perhaps you would like to build a house in the mountains or at your favorite lake for summers away from the city, but you don’t want to invest in a large house you’ll spend so little time in.

Every property is unique so you still need to do some important work with these plans based on the specific site and the orientation of the ADU. To make it easier to plan and build Accessory Dwelling Units, some cities and counties have commissioned plans. And lastly, I’ve tucked in some alternative ways to get plans at the end in case you want to keep researching. To better target the plans that meet your expectations, please use the different filters available to you below. Because material costs vary, it’s difficult to specify bathroom remodeling costs by square footage alone. However, materials and labor are almost always pricier for larger spaces, so it’s possible to give some broad ranges. Costs average between $600 and $800 per square foot, according to Remodeling magazine’s 2022 Cost vs. Value Report. Boasting clean-lined open floor plans, muted curves, beam architectural design, lack of ornamentation, and adherence to proportioned angles, mid-century modern family homesencapsulate a wide range of forms.

The homeowners were in need of extra space to host visitors, but instead of expanding the footprint of their two-bedroom home, they decided a separate dwelling was a better option. Furniture designer Ash Dipert transformed three disused structures behind his parents’ Craftsman home in Bakersfield, California, into a fun and functional accessory dwelling unit. The goal was to turn the space into a guest suite that "feels like an out of body experience; a Willy Wonka vacation hideaway," says the designer, who now lives in the ADU. If you’re computer-savvy and you want to modify the files, you should download some CAD software.

We also provide access to Mr. Armstrong’s extensive archives, develop programs for the public that educate and inspire and host performances with multi-disciplinary artists from around the world. Armstrong was performing at the Brick House in Gretna, Louisiana, when he met Daisy Parker, a local prostitute, and started an affair as a client. He found the courage to look for her home to see her away from work. Not long after that fiasco, Parker traveled to Armstrong's home on Perdido Street.[86] They checked into Kid Green's hotel that evening.

PRESERVING THE LEGACY: LISTENING PARTY

He returned to performing in 1970 but it was too much, too soon and he passed away in his sleep on July 6, 1971, a few months after his final engagement at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Advance ticket purchase required to visit the new Center and the historic house. Tickets are non-refundable, but can be re-scheduled if guests have contacted the museum before the start time of their tour. The 20th century produced no shortage of legendary instrumentalists and vocalists but Louis Armstrong is the only figure who completely changed the way people played music on their instruments and he completely changed the way people sang. Perfecting the concept of the improvised solo, popularizing the use of scat singing, defining the concept of swing–those are just some of the ways Louis Armstrong changed jazz, and American popular music–during his lifetime.

Ballrooms closed and there was competition from other types of music, especially pop vocals, becoming more popular than big band music. It became impossible under such circumstances to finance a 16-piece touring band. He returned to Chicago in late 1931 and played in bands more in the Guy Lombardo vein and he recorded more standards. When the mob insisted that he get out of town,[66] Armstrong visited New Orleans, had a hero's welcome, and saw old friends. He sponsored a local baseball team known as Armstrong's Secret Nine and had a cigar named after him.[67] But soon he was on the road again. After a tour across the country shadowed by the mob, he fled to Europe.

Performs at the Sunset Café with the Carroll Dickerson Orchestra. Meets Joe Glaser (who will later become Louis’s manager). Briefly leads a band, Louis Armstrong and His Stompers, at the Sunset Café. Records “West End Blues” on June 28, 1928, which is today considered one of the most famous recordings in early jazz. William Armstrong abandons the family during Louis’s infancy.

Grammy Hall of Fame

In the 1959 film The Five Pennies, Armstrong played himself, sang, and played several classic numbers. He performed a duet of "When the Saints Go Marching In" with Danny Kaye during which Kaye impersonated Armstrong. He had a part in the film alongside James Stewart in The Glenn Miller Story.

Armstrong appeared on the October 28, 1970, Johnny Cash Show, where he sang Nat King Cole's hit "Ramblin' Rose" and joined Cash to re-create his performance backing Jimmie Rodgers on "Blue Yodel No. 9". Armstrong was a gifted composer who wrote more than fifty songs, some of which have become jazz standards (e.g., "Gully Low Blues", "Potato Head Blues" and "Swing That Music"). Louis Armstrong was already a worldwide star — a seasoned headliner with a Hollywood profile — when his wife, Lucille, surprised him with the purchase of a modest house in Corona, Queens, in 1943. He got his first glimpse of the place fresh off tour, rolling up in a taxicab. (He invited the cab driver to come in and check it out with him.) "The more Lucille showed me around the house the more thrill'd I got," Armstrong later wrote. Exit on the north side of Roosevelt Avenue, and take the stairs on the left.

New Center Team

Still, after revolutionizing jazz in the 1920s, Armstrong was in the vanguard of black entertainers who crossed over to white mass culture, leading an integrated band, appearing in movies and becoming a regular first on radio and then on television. At its heart, “Pops” is about one of the 20th century’s most interest- ing and enduring popular per- formers, with a compelling life story to match. One week later, 52 years to the day, we made that little kid in the baseball uniform’s sign come true and opened the Louis Armstrong Center to the public! Now that you know this seemingly long but actually brief history of how we got here, visit LouisArmstrongHouse.org and book your tickets to see the Armstrong House and the Armstrong Center today, just as Louis and Lucille would have wanted it. At the time of her death, Lucille was in Boston, attending an annual tribute to Louis at Brandeis University.

Work during hard times

The 1930s also found Armstrong achieving great popularity on radio, in films, and with his recordings. He performed in Europe for the first time in 1932 and returned in 1933, staying for over a year because of a damaged lip. Back in America in 1935, Armstrong hired Joe Glaser as his manager and began fronting a big band, recording pop songs for Decca, and appearing regularly in movies. A widespread revival of interest in the 1940s in the traditional jazz of the 1920s made it possible for Armstrong to consider a return to the small-group musical style of his youth. During the concert, Armstrong and Teagarden performed a duet on Hoagy Carmichael's "Rockin' Chair" they then recorded for Okeh Records.

Appears at the Nice Jazz Festival, the first international jazz festival. Makes his television debut on one of the first television broadcasts; the show is called Toast of the Town (later to be known as the Ed Sullivan Show). Continues to record with the Hot Five (and with the Hot Seven in May, 1927).

Among its steadfast champions was the museum's former Board chair, philanthropist Jerome Chazen, who died last year. That their dream finally came to fruition, after more than two decades of hopeful planning, is a testament to the strength of that vision — and the efforts of those who carried it forward. "We're thankful for the community that raised us up," says Regina Bain, Executive Director of the House Museum. "It's all in the spirit of Louis and Lucille — because they made such an impact on this community, and on this block, that people wanted to fight for this space."

Marries Daisy Parker, a prostitute from Gretna, Louisiana. Lives briefly with his father, William Armstrong, then returns to his mother. Joe Oliver, one of the finest trumpet players in New Orleans, becomes Louis’s teacher and mentor. Delivers coal and sells newspapers to help feed himself, his mother, and his sister. In America, Armstrong had been a great Civil Rights pioneer, breaking down numerous barriers as a young man. In the 1950s, he was sometimes criticized for his onstage persona and called an “Uncle Tom” but he silenced critics by speaking out against the government’s handling of the “Little Rock Nine” high school integration crisis in 1957.

Louis spends the first years of his life living with his paternal grandmother, Josephine Armstrong. After age five, Louis lives in a two room house near Liberty and Perdido Streets with his mother and sister, Beatrice (who was nicknamed Mama Lucy). On New Year’s Eve 1912, he was arrested and sent to the Colored Waif’s Home for Boys. There, under the tutelage of Peter Davis, he learned how to properly play the cornet, eventually becoming the leader of the Waif’s Home Brass Band.

Don’t miss this opportunity to witness the fusion of cultures and rhythms as Arturo O’Farrill and ALJE ignite the stage with their passion and artistry, all in celebration of International Jazz Day.

No two rooms are alike — “I guess ‘Rococo’ is the word I could use without losing my job,” Harris said of the overall aesthetic — though many are surprisingly modest, especially given Armstrong’s larger-than-life presence. He is the only person ever to have hit records in the ’20s, ’30s, ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. He played behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War and in the Democratic Republic of Congo during decolonization in 1960, during which both sides of a civil war called a truce to watch him perform, then picked up fighting again once his plane took off. The gold sconces offer a glimmer of opulence, but the walls themselves are covered in a subdued, cream-colored wallpaper — the same wallpaper that covered them at least 50 years ago. It matches the upright piano standing against one wall, and the two twill couches. There’s also a small TV — one of the first on the block — that sits low to the floor, so that the neighborhood children whom Armstrong would invite over (he never had kids of his own) could sit comfortably on the floor to watch Westerns.

His character would later inspire Webb when he created the 1950s TV series Dragnet. Part of that vision, Schave said, was a headquarters wired from "head-to-toe." And it was. Fewer than four decades later, the Parker Center would become the focal point for the unbridled rage of a community after four LAPD officers were acquitted of assault charges in the beating of Rodney King. When the Los Angeles Police Departent's new headquarters opened in 1955, the West Coast Modernist structure was the physical embodiment of Chief William H. Parker's dream of a nationally recognized monument to modern policing.

Parker's murderer was soon identified as William Edward Hickman (born February 1, 1908), a 19-year-old former co-worker of Perry. He was arrested in Echo, Oregon, on December 22, 1927, and then extradited to California, where he was convicted of Parker's murder. He made a written confession, in which he explained in detail how he strangled Parker, disarticulated her limbs, and disemboweled her. Following the orders of the ransom, Perry Parker—a bank employee—met his daughter's abductor in central Los Angeles on December 17, 1927. Upon the exchange of the money, the assailant drove away, throwing Marion's mutilated body out of his car as he fled. The child had been significantly disfigured, her limbs cut off, her eyes fixed open with wires, and her abdomen disemboweled and stuffed with rags; her limbs were discovered the next day in Elysian Park.

After an unsuccessful appeal, he was executed by hanging at San Quentin State Prison in October 1928. Marion Parker was survived by her parents; elder brother; and twin sister, Marjorie.

The bottles will be sent for conservation and their contents will be shipped to a laboratory for scientific analysis and testing by specialists in a controlled environment. As part of Mount Vernon’s three-year Mansion Revitalization Project, archaeologists working in the cellar of the Mansion unexpectedly discovered two intact European-manufactured bottles. The dark green glass bottles were found upright and sealed, each containing liquid. The building, much like the man whose name it bears, now appears poised to become part of the city's long, complicated, and at times painful past. Despite that, city officials told LAist that "pre-demolition" began Monday.

“As the bottles are shipped off for a complete scientific analysis, we want to share our findings and next steps for this historic archaeological and preservation initiative at Mount Vernon. Star Wars: A History of Lightsaber Design

darth maul original design

He delivered two quick strikes, which Kenobi met, returning his attack only once. Maul looked up, the life fading from his eyes, and uttered his last words. Upon the guidance of Yoda, a young Padawan named Ezra Bridger went to Malachor in search of the power to destroy the Sith. Maul befriended the boy and together they climbed the world's Sith Temple, working in tandem and acquiring a Sith holocron. While Ezra made his way to the top of the Temple, Maul assisted the Padawan's friends, Ahsoka Tano and Kanan Jarrus -- for a time. The Temple was, in fact, a battle station, and he would use it for revenge on all his enemies, while making Ezra his new apprentice.

We don’t know the exact timeline of how he got to Mandalore where he faced her. After the original Clone Wars ended after six seasons, we thought we’d never get that story, but with a final season announced, it’s likely we’ll finally get to see the siege of Mandalore and more of Maul’s story. Mace Windu’s lightsaber hilt is a particularly impressive one by prequel standards – it’s detailed and different but sleek and elegant, too. The enduring appeal of the lightsaber was enhanced by the sense of mystery surrounding them in the Original Yrilogy.

Darth Maul's Double-Bladed Lightsaber Has a Surprising Origin.

Posted: Fri, 28 Oct 2022 07:00:00 GMT [source]

Darth Maul Star Wars Christmas Ornament

After studying how to use a double-bladed lightsaber, Darth Maul built his own based on plans found in a Sith Holocron belonging to his master, Darth Sidious. The process involved joining two lightsaber hilts together at their ends. Ian McCaig is the same designer whose art would eventually inspire the witches of Dathomir in The Clone Wars. Early concept art for the character showed a villainous-looking woman with hair falling in strands across her face. McCaig experimented with ink-blot “Rorschach” designs as well as flayed-looking faces before finding the right look for Darth Maul. Like the double-bladed lightsaber, the curved hilt had already appeared in Dark Horse Comics’ Tales of the Jedi series from the 1990s before turning up on the big screen.

The Graflex SE Lightsaber

It’s a vital scene that hints at a wider world, one that would later be explored in countless tie-ins and spin-offs. He returned, tracking the Padawan and his rebel friends to their ship, the Ghost. Maul took the crew hostage, forcing Bridger to unlock and combine his Jedi holocron with the Sith artifact recovered on Malachor. Both saw visions as a result of the ritual, including a planet with twin suns.

However, the actor felt like he required some practice as he felt rigid and that he “didn’t feel like I was walking like the Darth Vader we knew from the original trilogy”. But that was just what Lucas wanted, with Anakin’s Frankenstein’s monster-style lumbering perfectly communicating the awkwardness of being essentially turned into a robot with a brand new set of arms and legs. When Lucas initially told 20th Century Fox that he was making the story of how Anakin became Darth Vader, they were as excited as anybody else. Then he told them that, in the first film, Anakin would be 10 years old.

When he was greeted by Ahsoka Tano instead, he made the most of the situation by offering to form an alliance, two outcast apprentices joining forces to put a stop to the creeping evil of the Sith. After clashing lightsabers in the throne room of the capital city, Ahsoka turned Maul's own weapon against him and was able to capture the former Sith Lord for the Republic. Darth Maul has to be one of the best-designed creations in the whole Star Wars franchise. Who knows what would have happened if the original design for the villain had been used, though. Star Wars Rebels features the final confrontation between Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Darth Maul’s lightsaber is cut in half once again, and he is defeated once and for all.

The truth about Anakin’s father

Ray Park also had a hand in developing Maul’s fighting style, and asked that the hilt of Maul’s double lightsaber be lengthened so that he could use it more efficiently. The Den of Geek quarterly magazine is packed with exclusive features, interviews, previews and deep dives into geek culture. Star Wars lore is so detailed that this article could stretch on infinitely.

Darth Maul gets his lightsaber (along with the Darksaber) back and crafts an additional one to forge to its end. During the Siege of Mandalore, he uses this double-bladed lightsaber to fight Ahsoka Tano. While Ahsoka shows him mercy and doesn’t kill him, Maul’s original lightsaber falls and is forever lost. The original Darth Maul lightsaber was the double-bladed one seen in The Phantom Menace (cue “Duel of the Fates”) for what seemed like the first and last time.

Electrum Wind Lightsaber

However, Maul’s shocking return also meant the return of this lightsaber (or part of it). A duel between Maul and Vader would have satisfied fans’ desire to see a fight scene between these two heavy-hitters, but Ahsoka’s story had more emotional weight, Filoni said. Without enough time in the episode to do both, Filoni decided to send Ahsoka to fight Vader, and, therefore, keep Maul alive. Sure, Darth Maul was a bit of a pushover for getting cut in half by a teenage Padawan. But in Son of Dathomir, he and his combined forces of Mandalorians and criminals capture both Count Dooku and General Grievous without lengthy battles. Once they’re in his clutches, Maul parades his success in front of Darth Sidious in one of the most telling parts of the comic.

Without Ahsoka’s appearance in Rebels, Maul’s fate might have been very different. Executive Producer Dave Filoni originally planned for Maul to die at Darth Vader’s hands during the season two finale. However, Ahsoka’s history with Vader was deemed more appropriate for the big season two finale.

The verbal barb Maul throws at Ahsoka — “One last attempt at glory to impress a master who has no further use for you” — is telling. He showed that very same weakness throughout the Clone Wars when he tried to return to Darth Sidious, so it seems natural that this particular effort would be on his mind when he faces Ahsoka. This isn’t unique to antagonists, but Darth Vader and General Grievous had extensive cybernetic reconstruction. Darth Maul goes through this in The Clone Wars, too, although it isn’t overtly obvious in Son of Dathomir. Maul’s original artificial legs are of a similar design to Grievous’, and were built out of Nightsister magic and scrap parts by Mother Talzin.

Darth Vader’s lightsaber – the one he uses in the original film – was crafted in a very similar way to the heirloom lightsaber we described in the previous section. There’s a key difference in the shaft, though, which is why they aren’t identical. The first lightsaber we ever clapped eyes on was Anakin Skywalker’s blue-bladed beauty, which was passed from evil father to disenfranchised son by a man who acted as a surrogate father figure to both.

Danielle Olivera Talks Summer House, Her Tequila Partnership, And More Exclusive Interview

danielle summer house

In case you need a refresher, Danielle felt like she had been cut out of Carl and Lindsay's lives when the latter two began dating, while Lindsay wasn't happy when Danielle questioned how fast the pair was moving in their relationship. Paige even poked fun at Danielle’s claims of being the CEO of a new app after Danielle suggested that due to her title, she’s forced to learn how to handle different personalities. Olivera hoped that "as their best friend, they would let me in a little bit more on that, but I felt like it was them against the world." That sentiment held true of Hubbard and Radke's engagement, which took place in The Hamptons amid filming in August. Hubbard, 36, and Radke, 38, had moved in together after a little more than six months of dating and just before filming began last summer. "They knew that their relationship would be put under a microscope [on Summer House], having seen Kyle [Cooke] and Amanda [Batula]'s relationship be put under a microscope, and they wanted to be as close to perfect as possible."

Lindsay, Andy, and Gabby Tease the Summer House Reunion

Lindsay is one of those women who quits her job to raise the kids but then can’t find a brand of organic apple sauce she likes so she invents her own, markets it, and then sells it to Nestle for $30 million in four years. She’s a hustler; she likes to work, and she has lots of energy. He’s always struggled professionally since we met him in his More Life days. Danielle wants Gabby to employ the strategy that works for her, and Gabby just wants everyone to get off her damn jock already.

Danielle was fresh off the heels of her breakup with Robert Sieber when she joined the cast of Winter House for Season 3, shacking up with other Bravolebrities for an unforgettable vacation in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. In the wake of the breakup, Olivera, who has also fallen out with former BFFs Lindsay Hubbard and Carl Radke, has been leaning on her other Summer House costars. Olivera went on to explain that she still considers Seiber "a great person" despite their split. She even still keeps photos of him on her grid, as does he. "We broke up towards the end of last year," says Olivera, who last appeared with Sieber at BravoCon 2022 in October. "It just wasn't working out. You know, it sucks because there's no animosity. It's just sad, honestly, that we couldn't figure it out."

She’s like my sister already.’ I just had this connection with her,” Chris added. The Summer House cast members quickly connected on Season 7, and Danielle revealed why. (What is that? A thorny picture, I guess?) Carl says that their fights get so intense that he wonders if he is the right person for Lindsay. Lou says, “That is not indicative of a healthy relationship.” He’s right! I think in the aftermath of the breakup, it became clear that neither of them was right for the other and that, other than bad behavior from one side, is why they eventually broke up. I'm definitely a good preparer, but I don't know if I have it in me.

However, things were made more complicated in their relationship when Carl got engaged to Danielle's best friend, Lindsay, after less than a year of dating, and Danielle felt like the two were moving too fast. Danielle Olivera and Carl Radke dated before she joined the cast of Summer House. Danielle told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in February 2021 that Lindsay did not pressure her to hook up with Luke or try to get them together to spite Hannah. "Luke and I are just good friends. And friends cross the line."

Well, based on the evidence we’ve seen on this here television program, it doesn’t seem like she is. Remember when she wrote off that hottie on the beach because he was a Cancer and then she was kinda mean about it? But, unlike Danielle, I don’t think her lack of game is a problem. Danielle wants her to go out there, get up in guys’ faces, and take what she wants out of them. While that is a strategy that obviously works quite well for Danielle, it is not for everyone.

All About Danielle Olivera’s Long-Awaited Fashion App, Donne (Business Details)

Whenever anybody in a minority speaks out, it's so important, and it makes everyone feel more heard, so thank you for having those conversations. I'm pretty busy for the most part, and when you give me a cocktail in a bottle, I'm yours. Nerd alert, but I love that it's in a plastic bottle because it's easier to travel around with. I'm, as you know, in between the Hamptons and my place in Brooklyn and everywhere in between, so it's a nice, easy grab-and-go. And [it's] a crowd pleaser for when you have people over. "Ultimately, we do love each other," she says of that crew.

Danielle is right to tell her these things, but that is the next morning over a bacon, egg, and cheese conversation, not right in the middle of the party when the beer tears are going to flow the conversation. Robert is Robert Sieber, an executive chef whom Danielle started dating just weeks before she started filming Summer House last year, after meeting him at an intimate dinner party he catered. He temporarily moved into the house for the end of summer, as viewers saw last week, and Danielle is excited for people to see more of him in the final episodes to come.

Who is Danielle Olivera currently dating?

In the closing seconds of Part 2, a text that Carl sent to Andy flashed on the screen. In the final few minutes of the reunion, Lindsay acknowledged that she doesn't think that Danielle has "bad intentions" regarding her relationship with Carl. And while Carl and Lindsay wouldn't share who would be on their wedding guest list from the Summer House cast, both Lindsay and Danielle said they want to move forward. "I, of course, can understand why her feelings would be hurt," Lindsay said. "I would also want to be a part of any of my friends' big, monumentous [sic] milestone occasions."

I'm hoping it'll come out in the fall, but it's been so delayed because I did have a hiring and firing situation because we weren't moving fast enough. It's good to know that some of those hard conversations — it sucked at the time — but it's good that it has the impact that it has for everyone else. It took a lot to get used to because the dynamic shifted, but it's great.

I want other people to feel the same way, that you can show up confidently everywhere that you go, which is a game changer in how you approach anything that you do. If you feel like you look good and presentable and it fits the situation that you're in, there's nothing holding you back from crushing it. That's what I want people to feel after they've used my app. Whether it be [that] they're going to the Hamptons [or] going to work, we'll know your personal style — hopefully better than you know your own personal style — and help you get dressed.

"You might be doing it for other people versus yourselves. I like that even though we're out there, we still maintain this bubble." However, Olivera told PEOPLE that she believes Lindsay not prioritizing their friendship is what ended them. "This is the first time Lindsey and I have gone a week without speaking to each other," Danielle revealed in a confessional.

"In my mind, I would have loved to have been the person to organize a lot of it. I would have loved to be the person to [be involved] in any way, shape, or form." Though Danielle and Lindsay weren't on the best of terms throughout the summer, the fashion app co-founder was still hurt when she learned that Carl had proposed to Lindsay without telling her. "I didn't reach out to Danielle. I wasn't sure that it was confirmed, to be honest..." Lindsay explained, adding that Danielle had been spending time in Aspen, which is where Robert works in the winter, so she wasn't sure if the two had gotten back together.

Darth Maul was original sequel trilogy villain, George Lucas says in new book

Now a single-bladed lightsaber, Darth Maul uses the weapon to gain power in the criminal underworld, forming the Shadow Collective. Darth Maul has a double-bladed lightsaber because he trained extensively to use one, channeling his rage and hatred of the Jedi to make himself the ultimate weapon of the Sith. Maul’s prowess with his lightsaber gave him the choice to use only one blade or pop both to engage more than one enemy at a time. In the original script for Revenge of the Sith, someone else was in charge of creating the senior Skywalker. Even though most people had already assumed this to be the case, it’s not hugely surprising it didn’t make it in. Now that Maul has finally died in canon, it seems like his story might have ultimately wrapped up on a message of hope.

As soon as the opening scroll is done, the audience is brought into a shiny spaceship where young Obi-Wan and his master Qui-Gon Jinn are on a mission to negotiate with the pesky Trade Federation. Incredibly soon, said Federation begin gassing the Jedi under the command of Darth Sidious. Out come the lightsabers – shiny, new, and without that cobbled-together look of Lucas’ original Star Wars. Later, Maul orchestrated the siege of Mandalore as a means to draw Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi to him with plans to kill Skywalker and deprive Darth Sidious of his new apprentice.

Obi-Wan’s final lightsaber

Although Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan’s Phantom Menace lightsabers could be deemed a little standard-issue, the same definitely doesn’t go for Episode I’s other lightsaber – that of Sith apprentice Darth Maul. The saber carried by Ray Park was a thing of beauty, with a sleek longer hilt and two ruddy blades on it. Darth Maul, with his striking red and black face, devilish horns, and wicked double-bladed lightsaber, looked like nothing we’d seen in a galaxy far, far away before. Unfortunately, the script let Maul down badly, and he was despatched pretty quickly, only to be brought back through the power of popularity in the animated series Clone Wars. StarWars.com has shared an extensive oral history of the franchise, which includes comments from concept artist Iain McCaig.

Dark Menace Lightsaber

While it doesn’t have a unique name, Darth Maul’s lightsaber is sometimes called a saberstaff because of the length the hilt requires to accommodate its dual blades. In Legends, Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber was born out of necessity. He’d been sent to kill Siolo Ur Manka, a powerful Jedi, and found himself physically bested. Instead of trying to win a fight he could not win, Maul relied on his cunning — he retreated to his ship, built two lightsabers and welded them together.

Like Maul, Dooku needed a unique weapon that would set him apart from other characters and help keep the franchise fresh. The swanky professionally-crafted-looking lightsabers fit that pitch to a tee. The design phase of The Phantom Menace was on a much larger scale than that of A New Hope.

Star Wars: Original Darth Maul Design Terrified George Lucas

He recalled that Maul was described in the script for Episode I as “a vision from your worst nightmare” and McCaig drew from his own fears as he came up with how Maul should look. The result was something so disturbing that George Lucas was horror-stricken upon seeing it. Darth Maul’s new lightsaber is a significant change from the original, with a hooked grip-guard similar to those of the Inquisitors, possibly having been built from the scraps of an Inquisitor’s lightsaber. It still produces two red blades — or perhaps “crimson” is a more apt description, as he takes control of the Crimson Dawn criminal organization while using it. Maul would conceal the hilt with wood, using it like a walking stick in public.

News + Features

This led to Maul’s battle with Death Watch leader Pre Vizsla, who he dispatched violently and without mercy to assume total control of the planet. Throughout this time, Maul dueled Obi-Wan Kenobi on numerous occasions, and in an act of pure hatred, killed Obi-Wan’s former love, Duchess Satine Kryze. His revenge would prove double-edged, however, as the act created a dark side ripple sensed by his former Master, Darth Sidious.

Maul took the first opportunity to betray the Jedi, blinding Kanan with a merciless lightsaber strike to the eyes. The Zabrak escaped the planet in a stolen Inquisitor ship, readying his next move. The Phantom Menace features the Battle of Naboo, during which Maul fights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Darth Maul’s lightsaber skills are impeccable, and he’s able to kill Qui-Gon Jinn. Obi-Wan uses advanced lightsaber moves to beat Darth Maul, cutting his lightsaber — and him — in half. Maul and his lightsaber plummet down the reactor shaft, chopped in half and left for dead.

In the custody of Ahsoka Tano and the Republic troops, a Mandalorian vault blunted Maul's Force powers so that he could be delivered to the Jedi Council. But with the execution of Order 66 and the clones onboard turned against Ahsoka Tano, her only recourse was to free the powerful former Sith Lord to create a diversion and give her a chance to save herself and her friend, Rex. If you love Star Wars, check out our list of the best sci-fi series, or if you fancy something a bit more magical, we have a guide to the best fantasy movies. Maul is one of the few characters known to have wielded the Darksaber, a rare distinction. Hardcore fans will know that Lucas originally meant for the saga to be a tale from a fictional bible known as the “Journal of the Whills,” but we never got an explanation of the Whills in the film.

The differences between these designs – as subtle as they may have been to the viewing public – are part of the vast detail that made the Star Wars galaxy immediately visually impressive. The individual touches also help the world feel lived-in and individualized. Luke’s was built from the flash attachment of a Graflex 3 cell unit, while Vader’s was made from a different flash attachment – one from a British 3-cell MPP Microflash. Of course, the minutiae of old cameras doesn’t mean much to us these days, but that explains why the two weapons aren’t identically shaped.

The issue also features a new Star Wars droid design in the workshop section, new Pod Racer art from Terryl, as well as an interview with Ralph McQuarrie who designed the look of the original Star Wars trilogy. We mentioned her earlier, but Asajj Ventress – one of the main antagonists of the still-considered-canon Clone Wars saga – definitely deserves her own section in any article about lightsabers. Unlike anyone else’s from the films, Palpatine’s lightsabers look expensive and decadent, made predominantly with gold and silver metals. They’re shiny, sleek, and having a spare one means that when you drop one out of a window you’ve always got a back-up. Luke’s shoto-and-a-regular-lightsaber combined technique has since been adopted in video games and The Clone Wars series, but Yoda’s big screen antics remain the most famous use of a shorter lightsaber. Although this is the first time we’d seen a double-bladed lightsaber on the big screen, the idea was around for a while before that in the Expanded Universe.

Since 1997 people have railed against the change in A New Hope where hapless bounty hunter Greedo shoots Han Solo at point-blank range and misses. But Lucas sticks to his blaster and says in the book that this was always the case. “I never designed Han to be a ruthless killer,” he says, “all the good guys shoot in self-defense. The novel Ahsoka opens with a short scene showing some of what Maul was up to around the time of Revenge of the Sith.

As it stands, this piece is already twice the length of our average feature (which don’t tend to be short at the best of times), and we haven’t managed to fit quite a few things in. Sometimes, he needs to be a smuggler, so he can use his weapon as a blaster. But when the time comes, he can press a different button and activate lightsaber mode.

Taschen’s book contains enough concept art to fill an AT-AT, with one of the most intriguing images being an idea for how Anakin would have looked in Revenge of the Sith. Concept illustrator Ian McCaig drew an image of Hayden Christensen in a look that wouldn’t be out of place in a Mad Max movie, with his sleeveless Jedi tunic ripped open to the chest. Anakin’s hair is even more extreme, being shaved aside from a thin mohawk à la Travis Bickle in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, with it finishing in a braided ponytail.
